Bikini Bash w/ Tropix International, Jesse & The Trippers

When: Sun., May 16, 5:30 p.m. 2010

The Windjammer launches the Bud Light Lime Bikini Bash this week with live music, cold beer, and a full lineup of bathing beauties. The annual summer series, formerly known as the Budweiser Bikini Bash, began in 1985 at the pre-Hugo Windjammer. This year’s kickoff starts at 3 p.m. Sunday with dance beats, funk, and reggae from the turntables of Tropix International Sounds. Co-sponsor 95SX will send Jiggy, their daytime DJ, each week to the Bikini Bash to be emcee. The contest begins on the beachfront deck around 5:30 p.m. “The girls have to be at least 18 or older to sign up,” says club owner Bobby Ross. “That’s the main requirement. They sign a form giving permission for us to use a photograph in an ad. If anyone takes their bikini off or shows nudity, they’re disqualified.” The winners are determined by the crowd’s response and — for the first time in nearly 25 years — by a small team of judges as well, including this writer. Columbia-based Americana/pop band Jesse & the Trippers — led by singer/guitarist Jesse Isley — plays two sets of party-rock on the deck after the winners are announced at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but a wristband for ordering drinks costs two bucks. The Sunday afternoon series continues through August, when the final rounds determine the grand prize winner. —T. Ballard Lesemann
