The U.S. Tennis Association named Charleston the “Best Tennis Town in America” last year, so it’s no surprise that one of the sport’s biggest events is headed this way. The 2011 World TeamTennis (WTT) Finals will take place at the Family Circle Tennis Center July 22-24. On Monday, we took part in a conference call with none other than tennis legend Billie Jean King, WTT co-founder, to chat about the event.
“Great tennis always finds a home in Charleston,” King says. “There have been so many memorable matches played in this stadium and we think the WTT Finals will add to that history. The tennis fans there appreciate the game and I’m confident they will embrace team tennis as well.”
The 36th season of the WTT Pro League begins July 4 and runs throughout the month with the top two teams from each conference advancing to the finals. Teams are made up of a coach and two male and two female players who play five total sets of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The 2011 lineup includes three generations of tennis stars like Venus and Serena Williams, John McEnroe, Anna Kournikova, and Pete Sampras.
Single tickets range from $15-$55. They can be bought at familycirclecup.com or at ticketmaster.com. And if you just can’t wait until July to get your tennis fix, there’s a little thing called the Family Circle Cup that’s right around the corner.
