Boz Scaggs

When: Sun., July 11 2010

Veteran songwriter and vocalist Boz Scaggs (a.k.a. William Royce Scaggs) brings a hefty setlist of cool, funky, red-blooded rock and soul to the Performing Arts Center on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Scaggs started rockin’ and slidin’ years ago as a member of the Steve Miller Band before achieving artistic and commercial success as a solo act. His first big break came in 1976 with the album Silk Degrees, which included the flute-accented single “Lowdown” — a danceable pop/funk number with a disco-friendly beat — and the brassy, swingin’ smash hit “Lido Shuffle.” 1980’s Middle Man featured another shuffly velvety-smooth blues-pop hit titled “Breakdown Dead Ahead.” These chart toppers fit comfortably next to what the likes of Steely Dan, Jackson Browne, Elton John, and the Doobie Brothers were up to at the time. Scaggs’ latest album is titled Speak Low. —T. Ballard Lesemann
