Briefs: Lindsey Graham, city exhibit, Charleston rankings, H20 trends

"I've got plenty of sins that I'm not going to share with anyone else."

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on the news last week that Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) had an affair with the wife of a staffer. The woman had worked as a campaign volunteer during the senator's last election. Graham noted it was a personal matter, while Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) suggested Ensign's family-values credentials were at risk. "People don't like hypocrites, so we've got to live up to what we say," DeMint said. Source: Politico

That's South Carolina's unemployment rate for May, according to the S.C. Employment Security Commission. Charleston County's unemployment rate, at 8.6 percent, is nearly double what it was a year ago.

That's the amount of money from the drugs and narcotics fund that the City of Charleston is going to spend on hiring a drug prosecutor. So, money from confiscated, illegal drugs are being used to hire someone who will stop the use of illegal drugs? Well, I hope for his sake he doesn't do too well at his job.

City Shows Its Roots

The City of Charleston's Civic Design Center is hosting a new exhibit, Civic Action, spotlighting several local grassroots organizations.

Participants include Architecture for Humanity, Charleston Arts Coalition, Charleston Horticultural Society, Charleston Miracle League, Charleston Moves, Fields to Families, Holy City Bike Co-op, Louie's Kids, Lowcountry Earth Force, Pecha Kucha Charleston, and Pour It Now.

Each group was asked about what role their organization plays in improving the community. The exhibit's free opening will be at 6:30 p.m. on June 25, when each group will give a five-minute speech and reveal a piece of art that symbolizes this civic action.

The Civic Design Center is located at 85 Calhoun Street, in front of Gaillard Auditorium. The exhibit will run through Aug. 7. — Greg Hambrick

It's nice to be noticed. It's annoying to be noticed so much. Lists are cheap and easy (look elsewhere on this very page) and it's likely because of that fact that magazines are going list crazy. It's led to a few big ranking announcements for Charleston. Forbes recently put the Charleston-Summerville area at No. 7 among the best cities for technology jobs, noting the region's "information sector growth." In Newsweek's latest high school poll, Academic Magnet High School in North Charleston continued its run among the top programs nationally with a 12th place ranking. Finally, the Isle of Palms was listed as the sixth sexiest beach by Maxim magazine, whose reporter must have visited for the bikini contest and then got totally wasted. But hey, at least he had a good time. —Greg Hambrick

Trend alert: H2Oh, yes, indeed

Maybe it's the spring. Maybe it's the daily storms. Ladies and gentlemen, the big element in town these days is that little liquid libation we know as water. 

A recent campaign for the South Carolina Aquarium's penguin exhibit reads, "H2Oh!" And a city photo exhibit on the city's water resources that's wrapping up this week is named "H2Oly City."

We're digging it, and have a few ideas of our own for some more water-based slogans:
