ff John Shalikashvili wrote in a New York Times opinion piece that he now supports gays serving openly in the military. Shalikashvili was chairman when the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was implemented in 1993. He says that conversations with gay and lesbian military personnel have guided his switch. In the piece he also points to a recent Zogby poll that suggests gays serving isn’t such the detriment to the military that it was once thought to be, with only 37 percent of service members polled saying gays shouldn’t serve openly and only 10 percent saying they wouldn’t have joined the military if gays were allowed to serve openly.
