Charleston County has appropriated $221 million for greenbelts, the idea being to protect the Lowcountry lifestyle and landscape by preserving land. The Greenbelt Bank Board met last week to discuss how those funds will be divvied up. The goal is that 30 percent of Charleston County, or 200,000 acres, be set aside as greenspace, requiring the acquisition of 40,000 more acres. Corridors are a small percentage of the land, but have a huge impact by linking preserved areas with bike and pedestrian trails. Greenville and Columbia are both exploring greenbelt plans now, so Charleston’s already ahead of the curve. Here’s the breakdown:
