Whether you're a diehard fan of Cajun cuisine or a newbie, there's only one dish you absolutely have to order at Cajun Kountry Café to get a taste of what this North Charleston restaurant has to offer: the Cajun Café combo platter ($15.99/small, $25.99/large). This mini-buffet of Cajun creations comes with four bowls of the bayou's best — red beans and rice, gumbo, jambalaya, and clam and crawfish etouffee. Made with fresh herbs and four different kinds of sausage, the red beans and rice had us digging in again and again, while the clam and crawfish etouffee — which gets a boost from what we guess was a bit of saffron — was so good we begrudgingly had to share it. The gator skewers ($3.49) were surprisingly tender, and the Cajun fried pickles packed a powerful and spicy punch. Cajun Kountry also serves up an assortment of po' boys and baskets. Best of all, the fare is very reasonably priced. —Chris Haire, Dish (Summer 2011)
