Sunday afternoon's chART block party blended live mural painting, an epic B-boy battle, and beloved food trucks to the delight of hundreds who showed up to celebrate the outdoor art initiative in quirky Avondale. The 15-plus murals that cover nearly two blocks of Alycia Alley are an exciting addition to the 'hood and make it a new destination for art lovers and photographers.
The mood was lively as families, puppies, dancers, DJs, and painters mingled in the sunshine. A henna artist and a body painter added skin art to the mix. Bacon tacos (a new way to eat swine!) from Hello My Name is BBQ were a hit as well as the hot, fresh Diggety Doughnuts. The King of Pops also had some nice flavor combos to chill out with.
DanceFX performed modern hip-hop choreography and breakdancing, making the alleyway a dance nexus all afternoon. At the end, tiny kids climbed on stage to mimic breakdancing moves in a joyful display. The party helped raise money to pay for even more outdoor art around the area, raising the question: Where will the next Alycia Alley be?
