Charleston’s soccer team is ready to get back on the field, and they’re going tropical for the first game. After a 2012 season as the third-ranked USL Pro team in the U.S., the Battery is taking on the Antigua Barracudas. Most of last year’s championship team is returning, and players Jose Cuevas and Nicki Patterson trained with the major league in the preseason. The Battery knows how to treat the fans, and the first 500 through the gates will get a free Battery T-shirt, courtesy of SPARC, a local software developer. After the game, stay for the fireworks display. “Buy your tickets in advance,” says Battery rep Whitney Wood. “We’re expecting a crowd.” As the season continues, watch for them to take on rival teams like the Wilmington Hammerheads and the Richmond Kickers.
