Vladimir Putin, Justin Bieber, and every member of congress walk into a bar. We lock the door, never let them out, and force them to form a society of pariahs where they can do no harm to the rest of the world. Sorry, not funny. If you want to hear a funny joke, then you’d better head to Theatre 99 this Friday for the last prelim match of this year’s stand-up competition. Every prelim has 14 gladiators who get five minutes to make the audience chuckle. If they fail in this task they are sacrificed to Carl, the crocodile god of comedy. Greg Tavares, the co-artistic director of Theatre 99 says, “There are so many funny people in this competition. On any given night, it’s anyone’s game.” Audience members will receive two votes. One is for their friend who they came to support, the other for the person they think is actually funny. Any ballot without two names on it is thrown away. Tavares says, “If you like last comic standing type of shows you should come, but mostly anyone who wants to laugh should come out.”
