Charleston Harbor Fest

When: June 26-29 2009

Although Charleston isn’t a city that constantly brags about its harbor, that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate it. Show your love for our humble haven this weekend, at the city’s annual blow-out celebrating the harbor — Charleston Harbor Fest. This family-friendly event features a whole posse of activities that are both fun and educational. The tall ships will start arriving in the harbor Thursday morning, and on Friday, festival grounds will open — HQ is the Charleston Maritime Center, near the S.C. Aquarium. From then on, the days will be packed with parades, games, gun and cannon demos, boat building, and more. On Saturday at 6 p.m., head to the Charleston Harbor Resort in Mt. Pleasant for Harborpalooza ($15), a new addition to the fest featuring music from Plane Jane and the Blue Dogs. But Harbor Fest isn’t just about the water. One of the coolest parts of the event takes place in the air over the harbor, with the air show twice daily on Saturday and Sunday. You’ll see aerobatic flight demos, parachute displays, and military fly-bys — and you can see this from pretty much anywhere near the harbor. Check the website for the full schedule of events. —Erica Jackson
