Charleston's arts community opens up to the public

Open Sesame

This weekend Charleston’s arts community pulled together for OPEN, a fun, free, and informative event at the Memminger. We got a sneak peek of the event, hosted by the Charleston Regional Alliance for the Arts, on Friday night. Art galleries, theater companies, musical groups, and more set up booths around the sprawling auditorium, sharing information on their organizations and the upcoming season.

Attendees loaded up on brochures and goodies while getting a chance to meet many of the movers and shakers of the city’s arts scene. Redux helped guests learn to screenprint, Creative Spark encouraged kids to make fancy paper crowns, and Cone 10 pottery studio let folks paint tiles to take home.

On Friday night, we were treated to tasty nibbles and drinks from the likes of Poogan’s Porch, Cru Café, and Social while being entertained by two musicians from the College of Charleston’s jazz program — we hear that the stage stayed busy on Saturday with a packed schedule of performances. OPEN turned out to be the perfect name for this event, which exhibited Charleston’s highly collaborative arts community while making all of it open and accessible to the public.
