Christina Cone & The Best Intentions

When: Tue., Aug. 17 2010

A busy singer-songwriter in New York City, pianist and vocalist Christina Cone returns to her hometown of Charleston this week for two shows with her band, the Best Intentions. Cone relocated to N.Y. in 2006 and gradually developed a soulful, smoky pop style. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists Sean McCann, Kenneth Harris, Benjamin Woodbury, and Ward Williams (formerly of Jump, Little Children), the Best Intentions recently recorded a seven-song EP at Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn (it’s due in January). With an appealingly wide range and a strong vibrato, Cone’s singing and songwriting styles fall somewhere between the earthy pop sensibility of Carole King, the melancholic sincerity of Emmylou Harris, and the mysterious emotional murk of Tori Amos. The band hits the Windjammer on the IOP on Tuesday night. —T. Ballard Lesemann
