Cinco de Mayo Festival

When: Fri., May 1, 7-11 p.m. 2009

So technically, this event is on Uno de Mayo, but organizers knew that a Tuesday night fiesta couldn’t get nearly as loco. This year’s festival pulls out all the stops for the evening, featuring live salsa band Orquesta GarDel, DJ Luigi of Latin Groove, and New York-based reggaeton group Taton y Tremendo. The Dancing with the Local Stars competition is sure to be entertaining, with performances from high-profile Charlestonians who’ve been working for weeks on their routines. You’ll see Charleston magazine Style Editor Ayoka Lucas, DJ Natty Heavy, Live 5 reporter Tracy Amick, and News 2 anchor Tara Lynn. Eating spicy food, sipping tart margaritas, and watching local celebs battle it out on the dance floor sounds like a good way to spend a Friday night to us. A portion of all proceeds benefit the Ryan White HIV Care Program at Roper St. Francis Healthcare. —Reina Gascon-Lopez
