Some two years ago, the IMAX theater at the Aquarium Wharf shut its doors. It was a bad time for IMAX fans in the Holy City — especially those folks in Charleston who wanted to see last year's blockbuster hit The Dark Knight, which was shot with IMAX in mind, on the really, really big screen. Fortunately, the IMAX drought is over, just in time for James Cameron's 3-D epic Avatar. On Oct. 2, the Citadel Mall IMAX Stadium 16 in West Ashley will open; in addition to a handful of regular stadium-seating screens, the new theater will have an IMAX auditorium and two theaters dedicated to Real 3-D pictures. To celebrate their arrival on the Charleston movie scene, the theater presents five days of unbeatable deals. From Oct. 2-6, admission will be only $1, and all concessions will be $1, too! Scheduled films include a collection of previous hits, from Up to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. (The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience will hit the, um, IMAX screen on those dates as well.) The official grand opening of the Citadel IMAX Stadium 16 — and the start of new releases — will take place on Oct. 9. (The theater will be closed Oct. 7-8). All proceeds throughout the opening week of Oct. 2-6 will benefit the March of Dimes. The Citadel Mall IMAX Stadium 16 is located at 2072 Sam Rittenberg Blvd. For more information, call (843) 769-7600 or visit southeastcinemas.com/charleston-imax.htm.
