Clash at the Coliseum

When: Fri., June 11, 7 p.m. 2010

Local mixed-martial-arts outfit Ultra Fighter America is holding their first event at the North Charleston Coliseum on June 11, featuring local firefighter David Griffin. Griffin, whom the UFA website calls “a real life ‘Rocky’ story,” might not even be the most interesting fight involved in the event. There’s also Olympian Sarah McMann, who became the first American woman to receive a silver medal in women’s wrestling in 2004 and whose story was also chronicled in ESPN The Magazine, and Charlotte-based fighter Justine Kish, a former multi-sport, high school star athlete who was adopted out of a Russian orphanage as a child. The event is being billed as UFA 1: Clash at the Coliseum. Griffin will face off in the main event versus former UFC fighter Houston Alexander, who was in the news most recently for his loss to Kimbo Slice on The Ultimate Fighter season finale in December. In addition to the main event, UFA 1 will also include 15 other fights featuring a number of regional fighters. Ultra Fighter America was founded earlier this year and is a Charleston-based company that promotes MMA throughout the Southeast. —Cameron Jones
