Clash of the Titans 3D

Rated PG-13 110 min. 2010

Louis Leterrier’s Clash of the Titans isn’t very good, but neither is it very bad, considering the type of movie it is. The 1981 version of Clash has its adherents, mostly comprised of folks who saw it at an impressionable age. I was too old at the time to be impressed. Even so, apart from being less stilted, and reducing that damned R2D2 knock-off owl to an in-joke cameo, I don’t see that this remake offers much in the way of improvement. The premise finds that humankind has become fed up with the gods and their capricious ways, which would seem a more tenable stance if said gods weren’t quick to take offense and retaliate with full smiting power. But the gods need love, it seems, so the duplicitous Hades (Ralph Fiennes with lots of crepe hair) cons Zeus (Liam Neeson in really shiny armor) to let him scare them into loving the gods by threatening them with his sea monster, the Kraken. In order to fight the Kraken, Zeus’ bastard son Perseus (Sam Worthington) sets out to get the head of Medusa, show it to the Kraken, and turn the beastie to stone. Perils and the deaths of most of the supporting cast ensue. The effects are OK, the acting mostly wooden, the 3-D unimpressive, and the entertainment value passable if you’re in the mood.
