At the City Paper, we like our ships like we like our men: tall and old. Like hundreds of years old. Which is why we’re so excited for the return of the more-than-200-years-old HMS Bounty to the Charleston Maritime Center while on its East Coast tour — and we’re really glad that the Powder Magazine is hosting a whole Colonial Maritime Weekend around it. This will really be a jam-packed couple of days: Besides daily tours of the Bounty and the Powder Magazine, there will be a book signing and lecture on Stede Bonnet, Charleston’s gentleman pirate; a live theatrical performance of The Gentleman Pirate by Rodney Lee Rogers; and the Charles Towne Few Pirate Crew living history program. You might remember the Bounty from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, so this could be the closest you’ll get to a celebrity in town this week without having to stalk Bill Murray. Tickets include all programs, though some have limited space.
