Conroy and Green to receive awards

S.C. Arts Commission still seeking nominations

Mere months after moving back to South Carolina, artist Jonathan Green has been announced as the recipient of the prestigious if tortuously titled Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Awards for the Arts’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

The S.C. Arts Commission Board has the discretion to give this award to deserving artists. Bestselling author Pat Conroy (The Prince of Tides, South of Broad) will receive the same honor.

According to Communications Coordinator Misty Moore, the high profile of the two internationally recognized award-winners will help to “relaunch the awards with a little bit of excitement.” Last year the awards were temporarily suspended due to budget restraints. “This will bring national goodwill to the state,” she says. “It’s a celebration of why the arts are important.” Commission chair Bud Ferillo describes it as a “spirit-raising recognition of two of our most accomplished, talented artists.” Conroy and Green should receive their awards in April.

The Commission is still accepting public nominations for other awards. They will be given to Palmetto State organizations, businesses, and individuals for their contributions to the arts. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 15.
