Conversations with Jennifer Wen Ma and Huang Ruo

When: Sun., May 24, 3:30 p.m. 2015

In this part of the Spoleto series “Conversations With,” Martha Teichner sits down with Jennifer Wen Ma and Huang Ruo to talk about their opera Paradise Interrupted. Spoleto’s Marketing and Public Relations Manager, Jessie Bagley says that Martha Teichner does a great job moderating the conversation, so we’re excited to see what topics they discuss. Huang Ro composed Paradise Interrupted, while Jennifer Wen Ma directed, designed, and wrote the libretto. Attending the talk before seeing the opera will help audiences better understand the artists’ motives and techniques, which are based on traditions dating back to the Ming Dynasty that incorporate modern Western ideas. Jennifer Wen Ma and Huang Ruo wrote this opera as if it were a dream in the Garden of Eden, which is represented by a black garden unfolding onstage. It will premiere in the Memminger Auditorium on May 22 at 7 p.m.
