Corey Smith w/ Matt MacKelcan

When: Fri., Sept. 3 2010

The title track of Corey Smith’s 2009 album Keeping Up with the Joneses tells the story of a poor kid in rural Georgia wearing hand-me-downs and eating off food stamps. It is Smith’s own story. “There is no keeping up with the Joneses when you come up from the bottom,” he says as he traces his rise. The song showcases the autobiographical bent his fans are used to, but it also marks a new-found maturity for the 32-year-old father of two. After playing his brand of acoustic, soul-driven country-rock for years in the bars of Athens, Ga., his popularity has grown through word-of-mouth all over the South and Midwest, and he now finds himself playing sold-out shows to thousands and selling hundreds of thousands of records. But his modest beginnings are still evident not only in his songs, but in his actions and attitudes toward fans (his website has a “Save Money” feature that helps concertgoers avoid ticket fees for his shows). Get ready to sing along to his easy grooves this Friday at the Music Farm. —Jared Booth
