Cosmic Charlie

When: Fri., Jan. 30 2009

The tune “Cosmic Charlie” is a groovy, well-celebrated deep cut on the Grateful Dead’s third studio album, Aoxomoxoa, released in 1969. A full 40 years later, Cosmic Charlie is the moniker used by a skillful, well-celebrated Georgia jam band capable of handling anything from the Grateful Dead’s vast catalog. The six members of the Athens-based group (featuring current and former members of Breathlanes, SVA, Abbey Road, Fuzzy Sprouts, and other Athens-based bands) consider themselves “a Dead cover band for folks that are ambivalent about Dead cover bands.” Guitarists John Miley and Michael Wegner noodle and exchange licks in the forefront, backed by a gang of some of Athens’ most experienced veteran players. “The general consensus is that if you’re looking for a band to play Grateful Dead material and breathe some life into it, Cosmic Charlie will rise to the task with breath of fire,” says Wegner. “The room will gleefully be elevated to the next dimension.” —T.
