Creatures of Habit

When: Fri., March 18, 7-10 p.m. 2011

In their latest show, Shibboleth has paired screenprinter John Pundt and painter Trever Webster for Creatures of Habit. Though it’s the first time the two have shown together, Webster points out that patterns, bold colors, dramatic line work, and open space play roles in both of their works, and a dark inspiration can be felt throughout. While putting together his stuff, Pundt’s hand was hurting, so he played with epoxy resins and dead animals, letting his wood surface become the pattern. “Despite the bright colors of my color palette when screenprinting, there is a drop of dark humor somewhere laced in the content,” Pundt says. “This time I wanted to see if I could still draw.” Webster loves wood grain right now too. “Sure, there have been, and still are, happy splashes of color, but dark content has always been the framework for what I do. Truth be told, I am in a dark place right now.” Webster believes there’s an undeniable chemistry between the two artists, and says they’re both “accessible dudes” and there’ll be some inexpensive gems for sale. “It’s going to look like we’ve shown together dozens of time before,” Webster says. Pundt adds, “I hope we develop an atmosphere that entertains. Ultimately, we both want that through our work.”
