Crosby's Seafood Wholesale Co.

Crosby’s Seafood was founded by Captain Horace Crosby more than 30 years ago, and the family business still provides Charleston with wholesale seafood. Dan Long, Crosby’s wholesale manager, says they strive to buy domestic whenever possible and support local fishermen. Long admits they may not always be the least expensive place to buy seafood, but he doesn’t want to be. Slightly North of Broad, Peninsula Grill, and Magnolias all buy from Crosby’s — Long says he likes working with the white tablecloth, high-end restaurants because they will pay for quality. Crosby’s is a believer in sustainability and is one of the largest local seafood companies. Their processing center, on the periphery of downtown, is basically a 5,000-square-foot refrigerator. There, products from the Carolinas, Florida, Alabama and New England are stored before they migrate to dinner plates. Though Crosby’s downtown retail market closed in 2016, Long says they are looking into adding a new retail market in the future.
