Cycle South Carolina

When: June 13-19 2010

After a seven-year hiatus, Cycle South Carolina (CSC) is back with a vengeance, and it starts in Charleston. Forget driving through St. Stephen, Sumter, Orangeburg, and Walterboro in your enclosed, air-conditioned, gas-sucking vehicle. Take a six-day bike ride through some of South Carolina’s popular scenic routes in the open breeze instead. The CSC bike tour is nearly 450 miles long (and here’s hoping that the weather behaves itself during that time), and there’ll be several activities along the way. In St. Stephen, cyclists will get to hike or kayak through some of the area’s cypress swamps followed by an evening of storytelling from special guests. Days Two and Three will be spent in Sumter. Riders will get to explore the public park in Sumter and the city’s historic opera house. Riders stop in Orangeburg on day four and can take a guided tour through Edisto Memorial Gardens. Walterboro is the last stop; there, riders can get a genuine small town experience, complete with quaint little shops and restaurants, and more. Participants receive daily complimentary meals, camping space, evening entertainment, and much more. Registration ends June 12. —Christina Janke
