Cypress Guest Chef Dinner

When: Mon., May 23, 6:30 p.m. 2011

Craig Deihl is officially in the club. He may not have won the James Beard award for Best Chef Southeast last week in New York, but he made it to the finals (as did Mike Lata and Sean Brock for several years before they won), and that means he’s arrived on the scene (even though he’s been making great food for years at Cypress).

With the nail-biting behind him, Deihl can relax and have a bit of fun. First up is the kick-off to a new guest chef dinner series. He’s bringing Leigh Anne Wong to town to create a four-course, wine-paired dinner.

Wong was on Top Chef (season one) and has gone on to have a successful career behind-the-scenes in television, working as Top Chef’s culinary producer before becoming a talking head on the Cooking Channel’s Unique Eats, which — interestingly enough — just happened to feature Deihl’s “artisanal modern Southern cuisine.” Wong even called him the “pope of pork fat” before going on to wax poetic about his patty melt (greasy greasy yum yum). Should be a fun night, and guests will get to hang out with the chefs at the afterparty.
