Only the good musicians die young. Atlanta-based Gathering Wild Dance Company pays homage to members of the infamous 27 Club, a group of musicians who died at age 27. Director Jerylann Warner never gets bored with the music from the five featured artists: Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Amy Winehouse. "Stylistically, I don't think I would have put these choreographed styles together for any other reason," Warner explains of the project.
Delving into Kurt's diary. Warner approached this project as an acting exercise and prepared by reading Kurt Cobain's journal with an acting coach, trying to find the best excerpts to read to the dancers when rehearsals began.
It's about how they lived. Audiences may expect the drug-addicted demise of these five artists to be revealed at this show, but 27 aims to focus on how "accelerated" these artists' lives were. "My hope for this show is that people walk away realizing the personal dare of each artist," Warner explains.
