Finally, all of those nights watching a leisure suit-wearing John Travolta prance around in Saturday Night Fever have paid off. Get off the couch and go shake your groove thang at Charleston Dance Alliance’s Dance Block Party Fundraiser. Charleston Dance Alliance was created in March 2012 to promote the love of dance throughout the community, and the event will host several performances by local dance groups, as well as a silent auction and games. With music by the V-Tones and a live DJ, You Got Served-style dance battles will rage all night. However, “the night is not completely focused on performance,” says Sara Bennett, Charleston Dance Alliance founder and executive director, “but has more of a dance party feel.” While the event will host traditional dance classes — ballet, modern, and contemporary — in an indoor studio, hip-hop and swing classes will be held outside. Steve Duane from Roaring Twenties Hot Jazz Dance Club will also teach the crowd a few basic steps to try out on their own. Funds from the event will be put toward the city’s first annual Charleston Dance Festival, a week-long event in September that will bring dance classes, lectures, demonstrations, and performances to the Lowcountry. “This is the first fundraising event for the festival,” Bennett says, “so 100 percent of our funds will go to the festival for master class instructors, paying our teachers, paying for our venue, and production expenses.” Diggity Doughnuts and Hello My Name is BBQ will cater the party, and alcohol will be available for purchase.
