Dead Confederate w/ Twin Tigers, Firework Show

When: Thu., Feb. 5 2009

Hardy Morris leads a surly-looking crew. While the singer/guitarist fronts a Georgia rock band with a deeply gloomy name (the band describes itself as “dark, raw, mind-blowing psyche-rock crawling from the South”), the fuzzed-out rock sounds he and his bandmates produce through their teetering amps and drums isn’t too bleak or blurry … in fact, it’s pretty damn on fire. Dead Confederate — Morris, bassist Brantley Senn, guitarist Walker Howle, keyboardist John Watkins, and drummer Jason Scarboro — started out as a high school garage band in Augusta. Several years ago, after a move to Atlanta, they started playing under the name Redbelly Band. “Things took a turn, and Brantley and I started writing serious personal stuff,” remembers Morris. “We weren’t just playing anymore, we were really writing and searching.” Under the new tag of Dead Confederate, the quintet relocated to Athens and recorded a self-titled EP in 2007. Last year, they made a splash in the rock underground with an even heavier full-length album titled Wrecking Ball. It’s massive. Also on the bill is the drone-y, Athens-based indie-rock/shoegaze quartet Twin Tigers. Led by guitarist Matthew Rain and bassist Aimee Morris, the band recently released an EP titled Curious Faces/Violet Future. Local rock quartet Firework Show opens the show at 9:30 p.m. —T.
