Dreamgirls: The Revue is a musical performance that Scott Pfeiffer, CEO and co-founder of the Charleston Performing Arts Center, doesn’t want audiences to confuse with Dreamgirls: The Musical. “This is an original music revue,” he says. “We feature and focus on the growth of the girl group sound that was so popular in the 1960s.” The show features music from the Supremes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Pointer Sisters, and more classic songs like “I Met Him on a Sunday,” “Lollipop,” “Please Mr. Postman,” and “My Boyfriend’s Back.” Pfeiffer says the name, Dreamgirls, refers to the dreamy status of these often very young — some singers were just in their early teens — singing sensations. “Prior to the psychedelic 1960s, [these performers] really strived to reshape gender expectations and the ability to express themselves,” says Pfeiffer.
