From a punched-tin ceiling to quirky benches and semi-enclosed booths, Dublin Down succeeds in creating an old Irish pub feeling in the midst of 21st-century Daniel Island development. Plenty of Harp and Guinness is on tap behind the big bar, and rugby and football (the European sort) are always playing on the flat-screen tellies. Great pubs are about more than just the pints, and Dublin Down's food rises to the challenge. There's traditional hearty pub fare like shepherd's pie, fish and chips, and savory bangers and mash served with colcannon, plus a large selection of what might be termed "Irish-fusion" dishes. Lamb and Irish cheddar on rye rolls make for tantalizing sliders while the "Rueben" spring rolls wrap up corned beef and sauerkraut. Dublin Down has adapted the boxty — a flat potato pancake — in innovative ways, filling it with gouda to make quesadillas and wrapping it around skirt steak and shrimp to create "Irish tacos." This kind of doublin' down is actually a safe bet. —Robert Moss, Dish (Summer 2012)
