Earth, Wind & Fire w/ the Explorers Club

When: Tue., June 26 2012

Reaching only its 40th birthday this month, the city of North Charleston may seem pretty young, but City officials are old enough to remember the brassy funk, soul, pop, and fusion of the legendary ensemble Earth, Wind & Fire and such hits as “Mighty Mighty,” “Shining Star,” “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” and “Let’s Groove.” They even hired the group to headline North Charleston’s anniversary celebration at the Coliseum this week.

At a media event at the Performing Arts Center last March, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey announced that the concert is a part of the city’s 40th anniversary celebration. “To mark the advancements we have made, we are going first class in our celebration,” Summey stated. “Both born of the ’70s — the City of North Charleston and Earth, Wind & Fire — we will be celebrating together with an exciting evening of shear entertainment combined with exceptional musicianship.”

Led by three longtime members — vocalist Philip Bailey, bassist Verdine White, and percussionist Ralph Johnson — EW&F embarked on their Guiding Lights Tour this summer in support of a new album titled Then and Forever (Legacy). They will perform with the full-sized North Charleston Pops Orchestra on the Coliseum stage. Local retro pop/rock band the Explorers Club will open the concert at 7:30 p.m.
