East Coast Paddlesports & Outdoor Festival

When: April 19-21 2013

Got a little Katniss wannabe in your life? Take her to the East Coast Paddlesports and Outdoor Festival this weekend, where she can test her archery skills just like the Hunger Games heroine (minus the fight-to-the-death part). And that’s just one of the activities that attendees can take part in. The festival has expanded to include rock climbing on the portable rock wall, slacklining, disc golf, and plenty of water sports like kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. If you’re more of a spectator, watch the Gibbon Slackline Company perform feats of balance and strength, or see experts demo outdoor products. “There is a lot of new stuff this year,” says Charleston County Parks’ Sarah Reynolds. “[But] long-time paddlesports enthusiasts will be happy to know that the canoeing, kayaking, and SUP portion of the festival will remain ... we haven’t limited that portion of the festival, just made it even better.” The festival also offers a full roster of classes on kayak rolling, fishing, and more. Serious kayak enthusiasts won’t want to miss the chance to learn from Dubside, the international authority on traditional Greenland kayaking. Classes vary in cost, but most are $25 and require pre-registration.
