Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul

When: Sat., March 19, 7:30 p.m. 2011

New York-based fiddler and bandleader Eileen Ivers, founding member of Cherish the Ladies, is an Irish-American musician with a great appreciation for folk music from around the world. Considered by critics and colleagues as a Celtic fiddle virtuoso, Ivers draws from elements of the Irish immigration experience — from Appalachian mountain music and cheerful old-time songs to sad “coffin ship” ballads and grim tales from the road. Ivers and her band present a Celtic-themed stage show at the Gaillard this week called Beyond the Bog Road. It’s a new multimedia concert with video, photography, and dance. “Irish music integrated with other North American music to form the root of everything from bluegrass to country,” Ivers says. “This was one of the richest cross-fertilizations of folk music styles anywhere. And it’s still bearing fruit.” Click here a full Q&A with Ivers.
