The Cuban home cooking of El Bohio has long played second fiddle to the live music at the Pour House. Both venues are owned by the husband-and-wife team of Alex and Vanessa Harris. He's the music-loving bar owner; she's a culinary school-trained Cuban-American who's put her family's recipes on the menu at El Bohio. Try the brightly flavored adobo lime shrimp or the savory black bean hummus. They also have pressed sandwiches (the good old Cuban) and plenty of plates (Ropa Vieja) along with tostones and fried yuca. The housemade mojo is basically a lime-olive oil-garlic vinaigrette, but boy, is it addictive and tasty. You'll be pouring it over everything and taking leftover tubs home for later. Next time your favorite indie band rolls into town for a sold-out show at the Pour House, get there before the crowds and chow down on the best Cuban fare Charleston has to offer. But why wait? —Stephanie Barna, Dish (Summer 2012)
