Avondale’s 4th Wall hosts EmBODYment of Self, a visual arts show that celebrates the body and raises awareness about the prevalence of body dissatisfaction in our society. It recently became clear to clinical psychologist Dr. Jill Ilagan that Charleston needed an event that would bring people together around the theme of body acceptance and disordered eating recovery. Ilagan says, “We want people to walk in the door and not know which piece to look at first.” The opening reception, where guests can enjoy wine and snacks, will feature work from more than 35 artists in a variety of different mediums. Some of these artists are in recovery from or in treatment for eating disorders themselves, some are treatment providers, and others are just regular people who recognize that body satisfaction is a hard won perspective. Half of the proceeds from each sold work will be donated to the local non-profit the South Carolina Coalition for Overcoming Eating Disorders.
