Fairey Parody in Iron Man 2

Artist gave his blessing

For those who have already seen Iron Man 2, you may have noticed a very familiar-looking poster image, one featuring Iron Man in the style of local boy Shepard Fairey’s Obama HOPE poster. Though this parody wasn’t designed by the noted guerrilla artist himself, he gave it his blessing. Via an e-mail from Fairey’s PR guy, the Obey Giant artist says, “I’m friends with the Iron Man movie’s production designer Michael Riva, who, along with his wife Wendy, was a big Obama supporter. He asked if I’d mind a HOPE poster spoof in the movie, and I said, ‘Of course not.’ I did not personally design the image, nor was I paid for it.” Fairey adds, “All of the Obama spoofs, positive or negative, are a reminder of the power and importance of grassroots activism to affect things.”
