Fire Chief magazine has named Charleston Fire Chief Thomas Carr as Fire Chief of the Year. Carr will be recognized for the honor at he International Association of Fire Chiefs conference this weekend.

The magazine noted Carr's previous work at the Montgomery County, Md., Fire and Rescue, making it one of the most progressive departments on the East Coast. Carr came to Charleston in 2008, reshaping the department after key shortcomings were identified in training and equipment following the Sofa Super Store tragedy in 2007, which took the lives of nine firefighters.

In a statement congratulating Carr, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley noted the fire chief's "steady leadership, open approach, vision, and personal investment."

Earlier this year, Carr announced that he'd been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Doctors have cleared him to continue serving, and he is committed to leading the department.
