Family + Kids, City Picks

First Day Festival

When: Sun., Aug. 15, 1-4 p.m. 2010

School-aged children are not reading this City Pick right now. They’re probably outside running through a sprinkler or splashing in a pool, trying to salvage as much of summer as they can before school starts. But their parents are probably reading this, desperately searching for ways to occupy their kids’ time and counting down the seconds before they can send them back to the educational grind. Parents can celebrate the end of summer and the start of a new school year, and treat their kids to one last outing, at the First Day Festival. There will be school supply giveaways (while supplies last), educational exhibits, face painting, a health and wellness center, a food court, a cooling station, free boat rides, tours of the S.C. Aquarium and the Ft. Sumter Museum, and a kid zone (as if the whole darn thing wasn’t just one big kid zone already). As a special treat, Miffy, the bunny star of ETV’s Miffy and Friends, will greet fans and pose for pictures. Enjoy your freedom while it lasts, kids. —Susan Cohen
