When: Thu., Jan. 1, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. 2015
We’re usually feeling less than chipper on New Year’s Day, and we have a feeling we’re not alone. Last year, the only thing that saved us was a brisk dip in the ocean — seriously, it brought us back to life. Thankfully, Charleston has two polar bear plunges, one on Folly and the other on Sullivan’s, to help revitalize New Year’s Eve revelers. The Bill Murray Look-a-Like Polar Bear Plunge on Folly encourages attendees to dress as their favorite Murray character and “freeze their Bills off.” The registration begins at 11 a.m., judging will start at 12 p.m., and the plunge is at 1 p.m. Awards will be given out to the best guy, best girl, best team, and best overall Bill Murray. A $4 Smirnoff Bloody Mary might warm you up a bit after jumping in the freezing water — or give you some extra courage before — at participating Folly bars. The Polar Bear Plunge on Folly benefits Surfer’s Healing, a local organization that teaches children with autism to surf.
