TUESDAY. If you’re in the mood for a good poetry reading, visit the Circular Congregational Church for the Charleston Poetry Series at 7 p.m. This event features readings from Laurel Blossom, Maureen Sherbony, and Margaret Baddour.
WEDNESDAY. Spend your lunch break at Marion Square for National Walk @ Lunch Day from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Health organizations will be giving out free health screenings, chair massages, giveaways, and more. Go to the Charleston County Public Library at 5:15 p.m. for Cheating the Stillness, a documentary about Julia Peterkin, who won a 1929 Pulitzer Prize for Scarlet Sister Mary. End your night with some Art and Entertainment at Cinebarre at 7 p.m., featuring music from The Shaniqua Brown and Rachel Kate, and art from CaleighBird Goold.
THURSDAY. Shake and bake with Will Ferrell and John C. Riley in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby at 6 p.m. for the final installment of City Paper’s Movies in Marion Square. Join artist Christopher Murphy of SCOOP Studios, the Art Pimp Consultants, and the Charleston Digital Corridor from 5-7 p.m. to celebrate the new Flagship Gallery. At the Unitarian Church, join pianist Lin Raymond and flutist Susan Conant in Chiaroscuro, a music recital, at 8 p.m.
FRIDAY. Friday is the first day of the North Charleston Arts Festival. You can find all of their free events on their website. At Alchemy Coffee, photographer Melissa Breeland presents her first show in South Carolina. The exhibition starts at 6 p.m.
SATURDAY. The 34th annual Lowcountry Shrimp Festival is at Robert E. Ashley Landing. Festivities begin at 11 a.m. The Palmetto Oasis Middle Eastern Dance Troupe presents Beyond the Veil, one of the many free events from the North Charleston Arts Festival. You’ll find this belly-dancing troupe at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center from 1-2 p.m. Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse hosts an open house event from 1-4 p.m. You’ll get to explore the grounds, quarters cupola, and the boat house. Authors Margie Willis Clary and Kim McDermott will also be there to sign copies of their book South Carolina Lighthouses.
SUNDAY. The Africa Community Exchange hosts a fundraiser to benefit the Ann Sandell International School in Liberia with an African Market. There will be food, music, art, dance, and a silent auction. The event is at the Unity Church of Charleston from 1-4 p.m. Can’t wait for Piccolo Spoleto? Holy Spirit Catholic Church is hosting a Piccolo Preview Concert at 4 p.m. where visitors will get a sampling of what’s to come from this year’s major arts event.
