Friends for Hire, Sequoya Prep School, At Last Glance, Capabilities

When: Sat., Nov. 29 2008

Celebrating the official release of a surprisingly professional-sounding, self-produced, six-song studio collection titled Avant Garde, Charleston-based alt-rock band Friends for Hire seem ready for certain greatness. It’s a slick record. The synth wash of “Sticks & Stones” would rattle that guy in The Killers (and maybe Gary Numan, too). At times a bit cute and sappy (listen for “Girl, You Look Too Damn Good” … a teen love song that might land them on an episode of The Wizards of Waverly Place), most of Avant Garde sounds pretty aggressive and tight. “After the show, we are going to be concentrating on getting ready for our first ever nationwide tour,” says singer/guitarist and studio main man Tony Morgan. “We’ll be going over our set a million times, and saving as much money as we can.” —T.
