Furry Affair

When: Sat., June 20, 6:30-10:30 p.m. 2009

Things have been a little hairy at the Charleston Animal Society — and it’s not just due to the cages packed with pups, cats, and other animals. The bad economy has seen more and more people giving up their pets, fewer people adopting, and consequently a constantly-overflowing population of pets. According to Kay Hyman, director of outreach and public relations, even healthy kittens have had to be put to sleep recently because of over-capacity. But even if you’ve adopted as many pets as you can without becoming a crazy cat lady, you can help. The Furry Affair is the Animal Society’s biggest fund-raiser, bringing art and animal lovers together to raise money for a worthy cause. You’ll see artists both well-known and up-and-coming, in many different mediums, from the unusual (like the trash competition using found objects) to classic Charleston street scenes. The price range should offer something for everyone. Tristan will provide heavy hors d’oeuvres, and beer and wine is included as well. —Erica Jackson
