A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blocks the light of the sun from reaching the Earth. This will be the first total solar eclipse to touch the continental U.S. since 1979 and the first to cross from coast to coast since 1918, and South Carolina will be the final state in its path at approximately 2:36 in the afternoon. Isle of Palms will be completely covered in the eclipse shadow at 2:46 p.m.
