Get ready to rock with the Girls Rock Charleston Showcase this Saturday at the Charleston Music Hall, featuring 12 bands and four junior counselor bands performing original songs. This will be the sixth showcase event from Girls Rock Charleston, a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to “addressing the intersecting problems of sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and poverty” in Charleston. “Since 2011, we have envisioned a Charleston in which girls and transgender youth trust and support each other, [using] music as a powerful way to communicate and exchange ideas,” says Jen Stevens, camp organizer. Girls and trans* youth participate in a one-week summer camp during which they form bands, take instrument instruction, and participate in workshops that blend music and political education and DIY media making, all aimed at creating the next generation of leaders. The camp culminates in the Girls Rock Charleston Showcase, a night of celebration and empowerment for the camp participants.
