Girls Rock Charleston

When: Sat., July 13, 3 p.m. 2013

Have you ever tried to learn to play an instrument in a week? Probably not because that sounds like a crazy, impossible idea. But Girls Rock Charleston, a week-long summer camp for young girls and transgendered youth, does just that. The camp is demanding, but the 50 campers are encouraged to be adventurous and creative, and even attend workshops about home recording, song writing, and DJing. Volunteers help the campers learn guitar, bass, drums, or keyboard before forming a band and writing an original song. Girls Rock’s Kim Larson says the kids sometimes “incorporate skits, switch instruments, or throw in some awesome dance moves” during their performances. This is a huge change from the beginning of camp, when Larson notes campers tend to be shy and quiet before they spend a week opening up and ultimately “become ready to show the world — or at least everyone at the Music Farm — what an amazing person they really are.”
