Historic Charleston Foundation Tour de Graves

When: Fri., Oct. 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. 2012

Step aside, ghost tours. We’re headed straight to the source of the spirits with the Tour de Graves at Magnolia Cemetery. Once part of a plantation in the late 1700s, Magnolia Cemetery is known for its park-like — and, if you’re there after dark, spooky — environs featuring giant moss-draped oaks and ponds. According to Melissa Nelson, director of communications at the Historic Charleston Foundation, this tour is a special one. “It’s unique in that it is self-paced through Magnolia Cemetery, which does not have regular tours, and will include several stops with talks from experts on wrought and cast iron, gravestone iconography and restoration, and ghoulish tales.” With more than 2,200 Civil War soldiers buried there, it’s also a major landmark for Civil War historians. To take a walk through the historic gates of Magnolia Cemetery, buy your tickets online at the Historic Charleston Foundation’s website.
