Holiday Festival of Lights

When: Fridays, Saturdays, 5:30-11 p.m. and Mondays-Thursdays, Sundays, 5:30-10 p.m. Continues through Dec. 31 2012

We don’t know about you, but the Holiday Festival of Lights is one of our favorite things about the Lowcountry holiday season. Apparently, we’re not alone — the festival is now going on its 23rd season, and over the years it’s grown like gangbusters. “It premiered in 1990 with only 18 light displays,” says the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission’s Sarah Reynolds. “Last year, we had around 750 light displays and 225,000 visitors.” In addition to the three-mile driving tour that takes you by lit-up Santas, snowball fights, swans, and the Ravenel Bridge, there’s also the ever-popular Winter Wonderland where guests can park and get out of the car for sweets, food, marshmallow roasting, visits with Santa, walking trails, and more. Feeling up for a run? See the entire festival before anyone else at the annual Fun Run and Walk, which takes place at the park on Wed. Nov. 7 and Thurs. Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. “You’ll be able to see a lot of the light displays up close, and notice things you wouldn’t normally notice when driving through the festival,” says Reynolds. Since the run sells out every year, make sure to register soon on the CCPR website.
