Holy Ghost Tent Revival w/ Wylie

When: Thu., Jan. 12 2012

This foot-stomping Greensboro, N.C., band weathered a storm last year with the departure of founding bassist and lead screamer Patrick “PJ” Leslie. But they quickly recovered their groove, moving keyboardist Kevin Williams over to bass. “It’s been a breath of fresh air,” says guitarist Matt Martin of the transition to a quintet. “There was about a month or two of feeling an unnaturalness, but we practiced our asses off and got into the studio with a whole slew of new songs.” Recording in Reidsville, N.C., in their pal Randy Seals’ basement studio, the Holy Ghost guys are halfway done with a new album expected to be released this summer. The disc will follow 2009’s Family EP and 2010’s live disc Northbound at Southpaw. Long regarded by regional fans and critics as one of the sweatiest bands with a banjo, churning dance floors into a froth with their passionate delivery, HGTR has rebooted with a greater attention to detail, says Martin. “It’s more rock ’n’ roll,” explains the guitarist. “We’re focusing a lot more on keeping our songs rooted. In our old stuff, there was a lot of chaos and time changes out the wazoo. The new songs aren’t as drastic or spastic, but focused. It’s a natural progression for any band to start to concentrate on the finer subtleties.”
