Hunchback of Notre Dame

When: Fri., Oct. 19, 8 p.m. 2012

A graceful Quasimodo might be a little different from what Victor Hugo imagined when he penned The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but that hasn’t stopped the Robert Ivey Ballet from turning the classic tale into a full-length ballet. A far cry from Disney’s bubbly, animated version, this production will remain much truer to the book, says Artistic Director Michael Wise. The ballet tells the story of the kind-hearted gypsy Esmeralda, who is framed for murder and seeks refuge in Notre Dame Cathedral, where she befriends the hunchbacked bell ringer. “It is going to be something that will keep them on the edge of your seat from the minute it starts. You think it’s going one way and it will go the other, you won’t know what’s going to happen until the very end.” The ballet will be performed in front of vintage sets including massive doors and backdrops conveying the epic size of Notre Dame.
